Andrea Römmele reacts to state election results in North Rhine-Westphalia

“There are no natural coalition partners anymore,” said the political communication expert on Tagesschau24.

In a key German state election in North Rhine-Westphalia on 15 May, the Christian Democrat and the Green Party won over the majority of votes, while the Free Democrats and Chancellor Olaf Scholz’s own party, the Social Democrats, both performed poorly. According to Dean of Executive Education and Professor of Communication in Politics and Civil Society at the Hertie School Andrea Römmele, voting results portray a shift in German politics.

That the two parties – coalition partners in the federal government – experienced clear losses in this state election is not surprising anymore, Römmele says. “There are no natural coalition partners anymore,” she explained further on 16 May 2022 in the morning broadcast of Tagesschau24.
