In the Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung, Professor for Sustainability and Director of the Centre for Sustainability provides three recommendations on the road to climate neutrality.
Germany needs stronger government coordination to achieve its climate goals, Christian Flachsland, Professor for Sustainability along with Nils aus dem Moore, Head of the Berlin office of Leibniz Institute for Economic Research, argue in an op-ed published in Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung on 12 October. Drawing from insights of the Ariadne research project on Germany’s sustainable energy transition, Flachsland and aus dem Moore call on the next government to implement three central measures.
“First, it is essential that a new coalition, despite differences over individual measures, sees the transformation to greenhouse-gas neutrality as a high-priority and cooperative joint project”, Flachsland and aus dem Moore state. Second, the Chancellor’s Office needs to take a stronger lead in coordinating climate politics, including adequate human resources and executive departments. Third, the continuation of a cabinet of ministers focused on climate, “should become the linchpin of German climate policy”, establishing a more regular forum to discuss climate measures and engage with external expertise.
According to Flachsland and aus dem Moore, these measures would lead to a more effective domestic climate policy process. Moreover, the changes would help in coordinating Germany’s climate policy at the EU and international level.
