Europe does not need big tech companies

In an interview with CNN, Joanna Bryson explains why she thinks that Europe can be a leader in tech regulation, even without companies like Google or Amazon.

The European Union set out to release new regulations for a new digital strategy that is intended to enable a “Europe fit for the Digital Age”.

Joanna Bryson, Professor of Ethics and Technology at the Hertie School and renowned AI expert, said in an interview with CNN on Wednesday that compared to the US and China, Europe is a leader when it comes to tech regulation.

“The GDPR (General Data Protection Regulation) shows that we not only defend the data of our own citizens, but a lot of other countries jumped in as well, like Indonesia, the Philippines and Japan,” she said.

“People always worry that we are losing competitions because we don’t have these giant tech companies that we can’t control,” she added. “But that’s not evidence that we’re doing a bad job.”
