In an op-ed in DER SPIEGEL, Andrea Römmele writes on how to deal with mistakes in politics

German politics needs to cultivate a culture of failure in order to move forward, says the political communications expert.

In an op-ed for German news magazine DER SPIEGEL from 5 October, Dean of Executive Education and Professor of Communication in Politics and Civil Society Andrea Römmele points out the lack of a "culture of failure" in German politics and why this could have a negative impact on the future of democracy.

"If we always stay frozen in the rigid mindset of avoiding errors, we won't achieve great things," says the political communications expert. And in the context of multiple concurrent international crises, making mistakes is an inevitable part of the political process, she continues in the article. "We will see more [mistakes being made], because at the moment policies are being shaped under high pressure, and the best solutions may only be possible with readjustments. The problem is not the mistakes in the policies themselves, but rather how we deal with them."
