One out of every five children in Germany lives in poverty, defined as a home which earns 60 percent less than the average household, and the number is growing. For children, this can often lead to physical, social and mental health problems, not to mention poor education and other societal ramifications.
Child poverty was not mentioned in the 2013 grand coalition agreement, although studies continue to show increasing inequality. The new government can no longer afford to neglect the issue.
Klaus Hurrelmann offers a six step process to alleviate child poverty, an effort which involves politicians and German society as a whole.
