Two-day conference brought Brazilian and European leaders together to discuss future of Brazilian policies.
From 23-24 April 2022 on campus and online, Hertie School students organised the Brazil Summit Europe with support from Brazil-based foundation República.org. Ahead of the Brazilian presidential elections in October, the summit fostered discussion and exchange between political leaders, entrepreneurs, civil society actors and academics from Brazil and abroad.
"This conference represents a timely forum to anticipate imminent obstacles and problems that will confront the incoming national Brazilian administration," said Cornelia Woll, President of the Hertie School, who gave the opening remarks. "It transcends regional boundaries, setting a significant precedent for the commitment of the Hertie community to pursue the public good beyond German and European borders."
Former president of Brazil Dilma Rousseff and Supreme Court Justice Luís Roberto Barroso delivered keynote speeches in which they discussed a wide scope of topics ranging from climate change, sustainability and democratic resilience, to digital governance, hate speech and health inequality. The weekend comprised five panel discussions that took place both online and onsite.
Climate, sustainability and green mobility
German Member of Parliament Lisa Badum and former Brazilian Minister of Environment and Co-Chair of the International Resource Panel Izabella Teixeira discussed climate change, environment and policymaking in a talk moderated by MPP 2019 graduate Guilherme Cassaro.
CEO of Volkswagen Brazil Roberto Cortes and CEO of Bravo Motor Company Eduardo Muñoz spoke in a session on lessions from the Brazilian mobility industry that was moderated by National Service for Industrial Training (SENAI) Representative in Europe Marcelo Prim.
Strengthening democracy
Brazilian Supreme Court Justice Cármen Lúcia Antunes Rocha joined Guilherme Casarões, Professor of Public Administration, Political Science and International Relations, and Marco Antonio Carvalho Teixeira, Professor of Public Administration and Management – both of Getulio Vargas Foundation – for a panel on strengthening Brazilian institutions and building resistance in democracies. The talk was moderated by Mônica Sodré, CEO of the Political Action Network for Sustainability.
Tackling health inequality
On day two of the summit, MPP 2022 student Caroline Cavallari moderated a discussion with former Brazilian Health Minister Luiz Henrique Mandetta, medical doctor and writer Drauzio Varella, Ariadne Ribeiro, Community Support Adviser UNAIDS, Mujaheed Shaikh, Professor of Health Governance at the Hertie School.
Digitalisation in government
In the final event of the weekend, Director of the Centre for Digital Governance Gerhard Hammerschmid moderated a talk with Joelson Vellozo of the Brazilian Federal Government and Rodrigo Diniz, Sub-Secretary of Electronic Governance and Services in Minas Gerais State on digital service delivery experiences in Brazil and Germany.
Hertie School students, alumni, staff as well as representatives of governments, international organisations and private sector joined the discussion.
