German diplomat draws on vast experience in his vision for ensuring security and stability and in Europe.
A new book by Wolfgang Ischinger, Senior Professor for Security Policy and Diplomatic Practice at the Hertie School, outlines the German diplomat’s vision for Europe to ensure stability and security amid global challenges to peace and freedom.
Welt in Gefahr: Deutschland und Europa in unsicheren Zeiten (The world in danger: Germany and Europe in uncertain times), published by Econ, a division of ullsteinbuchverlage, on 7 September 2018, draws on Ischinger’s vast diplomatic experience, including as German Ambassador to the United States and as Chairman of the Munich Security Conference. He examines the source of current threats and offers possible solutions to avoid disastrous confrontation in a time of great turbulence around the world.
Wolfgang Ischinger is also Director of the Hertie School’s Centre for International Security Policy (CISP). He has been Chairman of the Munich Security Conference since 2008. From 2006 to 2008, he was Germany’s Ambassador to the United Kingdom, and from 2001 to 2006, he was Ambassador to the United States.
With 65 million refugees worldwide today, the threat of conflict between major powers, the withdrawal of the United States from its traditional role as custodian of the world order and as a Europe’s reliable partner, Ischinger asks what responsibility Germany and Europe have today. He explores how the EU can speak with one voice, become a respected actor on the world stage and take a strong stance in representing the interests of 500 million EU citizens.
