Global Perspectives named Best New Journal by Council of Learned Journal Editors at MLA meeting

The online journal Global Perspectives, edited by Hertie School past President and Senior Professor of Sociology Helmut K. Anheier, was named Best New Journal for 2021 by the Council of Editors of Learned Journals (CELJ). The award was given at the Annual Meeting of the Modern Language Association (MLA) on 8 January by the CELJ, an allied organization of the MLA.

Global Perspectives is an online, peer-reviewed, transdisciplinary journal seeking to advance social science research and debates in a globalising world. It is published by the University of California Press.

The CELJ, an organisation of academic journal editors across all disciplines, praised the breadth and depth of the journal and its innovative structure. “This is an ambitious new journal on an important, wide-ranging topic,” the group said. “The journal’s commitment to a new practice of the disciplines in the social sciences, one that refuses to replicate some of the old power structures of a century ago, is borne out in the innovative structure of an emerging scholars forum, where postdocs and assistant professors both contribute and participate in peer review of others. … The range of topics is timely and truly impressive.”

Anheier, who is also an Adjunct Professor of Social Welfare at UCLA’s Luskin School of Public Affairs, said: “For us, it is further encouragement to the novel approach of the journal to focus on high-quality academic contributions that do not fit into conventional disciplinary and national boundaries. Being recognized as such and so prominently by our peers in scholarly publishing is indeed a great honour.”

Global Perspectives is grounded in the idea that national and disciplinary approaches of the last century do not capture the complexities of a changing world. It seeks new approaches to academic discourse to break out of these silos. It takes a transdisciplinary approach to advance social science research and debates, with subject sections informed by major conceptual or empirical issues, sometimes grounded in traditional disciplines, while also inviting interdisciplinary crossovers and comparisons.

Its editorial team is complimented by eight Section Editors and an international editorial Board-at-Large from all social science disciplines. To add to its diversity, Global Perspectives also includes an Emerging Scholars Forum of post-doctoral fellows, researchers at an early stage in their career or at the assistant professor level, recruited on the recommendation of the editorial board.
