Kaul was a Senior Fellow and former adjunct at the Hertie School. She passed away after a struggle with cancer.
It is with great sadness that we learned of the death of Dr. Inge Kaul, Senior Fellow and former adjunct faculty member at the Hertie School. Kaul was not only admired by her colleagues and students at the Hertie School, but renowned and respected worldwide due to her impressive and far-reaching research on topics such as global public policy and climate finance, as well as her senior positions at institutions like the United Nations Development Programme.
During her time at our school, Inge Kaul taught courses on global public policy and sustainability and contributed to various publications like The Governance Report 2013. In addition to her work at our school, she was also a Non-Resident Fellow at the Center for Global Development (CGD), Washington, DC, and an external advisor to various governmental, multilateral and non-profit organisations on policy options to meet global challenges. She will especially be remembered for her work on the concept of global public goods.
“Inge Kaul was a visionary who has profoundly shaped the discussion on global public goods, long before climate change and energy policies gained so much attention in our societies. She was an outstanding and brilliant colleague, cherished by our faculty and students alike. Our thoughts are with her family and close friends in this difficult time,” says Prof. Cornelia Woll, President of the Hertie School.
Long-time colleague and current Director of the Centre for Sustainability at the Hertie School Prof. Christian Flachsland adds: “Whether teaching a class on global public policy, speaking at a Hertie School event, or discussing with faculty and students over a coffee: Inge would never fail to point out deficits in our international public policies and challenge her conversation partners to do better in advancing improvements.”
Her passing is a deep loss to our community, and indeed to all engaged in international cooperation.
