Hertie School introduces new concentrations for the Master of International Affairs programme

International Security, European Governance, and Human Rights and Global Governance are the new areas of focus.

The Hertie School has introduced three new concentration areas as part of the Master of International Affairs (MIA) to equip tomorrow's decision-makers, analysts and campaigners with the expertise and skills to tackle global challenges - around the world, and across the public, private and third sector.

“We have identified three key areas, International Security, European Governance as well as Human Rights and Global Governance,” says Christine Reh, Dean of Graduate Programmes and Professor of European Politics at the Hertie School.

“These new concentration areas are aligned with the focus of our Centres of Competence. The expertise of the Centres helps to equip our students with a profound understanding of current policy challenges.”

Students can specialise in European Governance to acquire in-depth knowledge of the European Union’s institutions, laws and policies; Human Rights and Global Governance to further their normative understanding of global public policy and democracy; or International Security to focus on key security challenges and strategies.

MIA students will choose their specialisation during the second semester of their studies, allowing more time to develop expertise in their chosen field.

The adjusted MIA curriculum combines academic and methodological training with the practical tools that are required to develop strong policy proposals in a global multilevel system. Reforms of the MIA will take effect in fall 2021.
