Joseph Weiler joins faculty as Radbruch-Kantorowicz Visiting Professor Chair

Hertie School welcomes the renowned legal scholar back to Berlin.

This March, the Hertie School will welcome Professor Joseph Weiler as the Radbruch-Kantorowicz Visiting Professor Chair. This will be Weiler’s second stint at the Hertie School, as he already assumed the Chair in 2011.

One of the most renowned legal scholars to teach at the Hertie School

“I am delighted to welcome Joseph Weiler as the Radbruch-Kantorowicz Visiting Professor Chair at the Hertie School,” says President Cornelia Woll. “We are incredibly honoured to have him with us. Prof. Weiler is one of the most influential international legal scholars, a path-breaking thinker on European integration, but also on democracy and the place of religion in public life. As former president of the European University Institute in Florence, one of our partners in the CIVICA alliance, he shares our desire to bring social science insights to the public sphere in order to strengthen the public good."

Inaugural lecture on 16 March

Weiler is University Professor at NYU Law School, where he holds the European Union Jean Monnet Chair, and is Senior Fellow at the Center for European Studies at Harvard University. He is one of the most recognised scholars in the field of international and European law. In addition to being the director of the Jean Monnet Center for International and Regional Economic Law and Justice at NYU, he is also Co-editor-in-chief of the European Journal of International Law (EJIL) and the International Journal of Constitutional Law (ICON). Among the many distinctions that Professor Weiler has received is last year’s Ratzinger Prize, awarded by Pope Francis. Founded in 2011, the prize is considered the Nobel Prize for theology. It is awarded yearly to two scholars of any faith whose work has made significant contributions in theology.

“The Hertie School is a special place with stimulating colleagues and students," says Weiler. "I was truly thrilled when the Chair and my appointment were renewed this year. I am so much looking forward to teaching, meeting inspiring new and old colleagues and debating with students from across the world.”

Joseph Weiler will give his inaugural lecture “Religion in the Public Sphere” on 16 March, 6:00-8:00 pm CET, in the Henrik Enderlein Forum at the Hertie School. Register now.
