Alina Mungiu-Pippidi presents at G7 Workshop on Corruption Measurement in Rome

Alina Mungiu-Pippidi, Professor of Democracy Studies, participated in a high-level workshop at the Italian Ministry of Foreign Affairs on 27 October. The workshop on corruption measurement took place within the framework of Italy’s G7 presidency.

Mungiu-Pippidi presented the work of the European Research Centre for Anti-Corruption and State-Building (ERCAS), which is located at the Hertie School in Berlin. Mungiu-Pippidi and her ERCAS team have developed an Index of Public Integrity, in a comprehensive effort to measure corruption based on indicators such as private interest influence over government agencies (agency capture) or political favouritism, among others. Presented at the G7 workshop was the second edition of the Index, which now covers 109 countries; Norway is the top performer and Venezuela the worst. According to a press release from the Italian Ministry of Foreign Affairs announcing the workshop:

The opening remarks will be made by the president of ISTAT, Giorgio Alleva, the Senior Director for Development Economics of the World Bank, Shantayanan Devarajan and the Director for Legal Affairs of the OECD, Nicola Bonucci. The closing remarks will be made by the president of the National Anticorruption Regulatory Authority, Raffaele Cantone.
