Civil society practitioners from Germany, Poland and Turkey discuss the effects of populist speech and the strategies of resistance to populism developed in different parts of the world.
The discussion, which took place on 2 October 2020, was hosted by the Human Rights Film Forum and organised by Hertie School’s Centre for Fundamental Rights. Başak Çalı, Professor of International Law at the Hertie School and Co-Director of the School's Centre for Fundamental Rights, moderated a conversation on the effects of populist speech and the strategies of resistance to populism developed in different parts of the world.
Panel members Ezel Buse Sönmezocak, civil society activist and PhD candidate in public law in Koç University, Istanbul, Hamid Mohseni, consultant at the Mobile Counseling against right-wing extremism Berlin (MBR) and Małgorzata Szuleka, human rights lawyer and head of advocacy in Helsinki Foundation for Human Rights, discussed the ways in which resistance to populism manifests itself in their home countries. Panel members described the strategies that are being used to fight against populism and the role of courts, organisations as well as individuals in the resistance against populism.
