Hertie Foundation commits an additional 17.5 million euros to further expand the university.

Berlin, 30 August 2018 – Economist and political scientist Henrik Enderlein will become the new President of the Hertie School in Berlin on 1 September 2018. Enderlein succeeds Helmut K. Anheier, who has been at the helm of the university since 2009. Enderlein has been Professor of Political Economy at the Hertie School since 2005. He is also the Director of the think tank Jacques Delors Institut – Berlin, which he founded in 2014 together with the Jacques Delors Institute in Paris.
Under Enderlein’s leadership, the Hertie School will accelerate its growth. The Hertie Foundation has pledged to commit funding of 17.5 million euros over the next five years, in addition to its previously planned funding. With this commitment, the Foundation, which founded the Hertie School in 2003, will increase its financial support by more than 50 per cent. The funding will primarily be aimed at expanding research. Researchers at five new Centres of Competence will focus on finding solutions to today’s most vital global challenges: digital governance, international security policy, EU governance, sustainability, and human rights and democracy. In addition, a Data Lab will support the data-driven social science research and policy guidance. The school’s international master’s, doctoral and executive education students will therefore profit from even greater breadth and depth in the Hertie School’s teaching.
“The Hertie School has made a name for itself around the globe since its founding nearly 15 years ago,” says Henrik Enderlein, incoming President of the Hertie School. “Now we are ready for the next big step in our development. Berlin, like Paris or London, needs a first-class, international university for public policy, which prepares top-notch students for leadership positions in society, and which is a central hub for the political and societal debates of our time.” Futhermore, Enderlein says: “The Hertie Foundation’s engagement will enable us to bring a dozen new professors to Berlin and to sharpen our profile. In addition to the core topics, which encompass all aspects of the modernisation of statehood and government, we will concentrate even more on relevant key questions in regard to Europe, digitalisation, basic rights and global security. I look forward to a fascinating time at the Hertie School during a fascinating time in the world.”
The Chairman of the Board of the Hertie Foundation, Frank J. Weise, says: “We are deeply grateful to President Helmut Anheier, under whose leadership the school attained the right to confer doctoral degrees, and who has built up an outstanding doctoral programme. This year, under his leadership, the university also received a 10-year re-accreditation from the German Science Council.” Furthermore, Weise says: “Henrik Enderlein is, as an academic and as a manager of teaching and research, an excellent choice for the position of President. We fully support his plans for development. Henrik Enderlein developed the future profile of the Hertie School in close cooperation with the leadership of the university and the Foundation, together with professors, alumni, researchers and administration. The previous two-person management, consisting of one academic and one managing director, will be expanded to include three deans, responsible for the areas Faculty and Research, Executive Education, and Graduate Programmes. The new Dean of Research and Faculty is Mark Hallerberg, Professor of Public Management and Political Economy. Andrea Römmele, Professor of Communications in Politics and Civil Society, will be Dean of Executive Education. Christine Reh will be Dean of Graduate Programmes. Reh joins the Hertie School as Professor of European Politics, from University College London where she was Reader in European Politics and Programme Director of the MSc in European Public Policy. In total, there will be twelve additional new professorships, to be filled over the next two years. Most of the calls for the new professorships are currently posted and several have already been filled. The administrative team and research personnel are also being expanded.
Of the five new Centres of Competence, two have already taken up their work: The Centre for International Security Policy, under the direction of Wolfgang Ischinger, Professor for Security Policy and Diplomatic Practice, started up in 2016 and will now rapidly be expanded. The Hertie School will bundle its EU competence in the Jacques Delors Institute Berlin, under the direction of Markus Jachtenfuchs, Professor of European and Global Governance, und Henrik Enderlein. The Competence Centre will integrate the think tank Jacques Delors Institut – Berlin and will pursue academic research in the area of EU governance, in addition to offering policy guidance. The centres for Human Rights and Democracy and for Digital Governance will be opened in 2019, as well as the Data Lab.
The official inauguration of Henrik Enderlein will take place at the Opening of the Academic Year 2018/19 on 6 September 2018 at 5:30 p.m. in the Auditorium Friedrichstraße, Friedrichstraße 180, Berlin. Among the speakers will be the new and former Presidents, Chairman of the Board of Trustees Frank Mattern, Member of the Board of Trustees Lisa Anderson, and Berlin Senator for Finance Matthias Kollatz.
