Baums “fostered breakthrough in corporate governance in Germany,” says former German President and jury head Horst Koehler.
Berlin, 27 July 2017 – The Dr. Michael Endres Prize of the Hertie School goes to Theodor Baums, Professor for Civil, Trade and Business Law at the Goethe University in Frankfurt am Main. The 50,000-euro research prize, awarded this year for the first time, honours distinguished academics whose work centres on topics within the spectrum of the Hertie School’s research and teaching, and who have helped bridge academic research and policymaking.
The prize is named for the long-time Chairman and current honorary Chairman of the Hertie Foundation’s Board of Trustees, Michael Endres, who was instrumental in founding the Hertie School in 2003 and who has helped guide its successful development since.
The former German President and head of the prize jury, Horst Koehler, said, “Theodor Baums serves as an excellent role model for how academia can contribute to the practice of good governance. Through his research, and as the chairman of the government commission Corporate Governance, he helped foster a breakthrough on this topic in Germany. By awarding the Dr. Michael Endres Prize to Theodor Baums, we want to emphasise that modern governance is not only a matter for the public sector, but also for business and civil society. This basic concept characterises the research and teaching of the Hertie School.”
Theodor Baums is an expert on corporate governance, co-publisher of various journals and the author of numerous publications, an advisor to national and international organisations, and a member of the government commission on the German Corporate Governance Codex. He is a recipient of the Service Cross First Class of the Order of Merit of the Federal Republic of Germany and the Euro Corporate Governance Leadership Award. He has been a professor at numerous universities in Germany and abroad and has taught at the Goethe University in Frankfurt since 2000.
Former German President Horst Koehler headed the jury, which also included Frank-Jürgen Weise, Chairman of the Hertie Foundation, Wolfgang Schön, Director at the Max Planck Institute for Tax Law and Public Finances and Deputy Chairman of the Hertie School Board of Trustees and Helmut K. Anheier, President of the Hertie School. The prize will be presented to Theodor Baums at the Opening of the Academic Year on 31 August at 6.30 p.m. at the Hertie School.
