The course introduces participants to the theory and practice of teaching in higher education. They can apply what they have learned in practical exercises, for example through individual teaching sessions.
PhD researchers as of their 2nd year with no or little teaching experience.
This course will provide the participants with the skills to design a course proposal. Both the course proposal and certificate should form part of your portfolio when you apply for a teaching position.
In addition to the presentation of conceptual tools and strategies for good teaching and learning, such as inclusive classroom teaching, some time will be allocated to practical exercises. Participants will have the opportunity to apply what they have learned in short teaching practice slots. Participants will further be introduced to best practices in course design and develop their own course design which they can then add to their academic portfolio.
Dr. Annika Zorn is Director of PhD Programmes and Digital Learning at the Hertie School. Annika is a senior expert for Teaching and Learning in Higher Education and a Training expert – in the classroom and online. She has been training scholars (faculty, doctoral, postdoctoral researchers) for over a decade. She works with leading research institutions, such as the Leibniz Gemeinschaft and is a trainer in the Max Planck Academy. She has also trained professionals from around the globe, such as the International Monetary Fund (IMF), the European Banking Authority (EBA) and European Agencies. She is the founder of an online school bridging academic thinking and the world of practitioners in the area of energy and climate. Previously, Annika worked at the European University Institute (EUI) and was responsible for the academic and professional development programme for early-stage researchers. Before that, she was the Executive Director of the Florence School of Banking and Finance and Deputy Director at the Florence School of Regulation, both at the Robert Schuman Centre at the EUI. Annika’s areas of expertise are in early-stage researcher’s development, digital strategies in higher education, as well as teaching and learning. She is the editor of the book Higher Education in the Digital Age: Moving Academia Online (Edward Elgar, 2018). She received her PhD from the European University Institute.
