Stewart Cunningham is a Research Associate at the Centre for Fundamental Rights at the Hertie School. His research interests focus around legal mobilisation and social movements. In particular, he is interested in how rights and rights based discourses are used by marginalised groups in movements and campaigns for social and legal reform. His PhD study, which he undertook at the University of Strathclyde in Glasgow, focused on how the concept of human dignity is used, both legally and politically, in efforts to reform sex work laws. He has also, for many years, been actively involved in campaigning around sex worker rights and is currently a member of the Advisory Group on Legal Frameworks and Human Rights of the International Committee on the Rights of Sex Workers in Europe.
