This course examines international advocacy and campaigning. It will cover the major actors from NGOs to social movements and focus on recent developments in campaigning, such as digitalisation. Campaigning organizations now have a range of new technologies and tactics from Twitter to Facebook; YouTube to online petitions. Advocacy groups are increasingly using these technologies to mobilise the public to take action, however there is great debate over their effectiveness. The class will examine different models of international advocacy: from agenda-setting to rapid response campaigning. Students will develop a campaign strategy and present this in coordination with a partner organisation. They will also have the opportunity to meet and interview campaigners and gain insights into the profession.
This course is for 1st year MPP students only.
