A Practical Approach to EU International Security Crisis Response
Instructor(s): Alejandro Ribo
Abstract
This course provides an immersive exploration of the European Union's strategic response to international security crises, focusing on the Common Foreign and Security Policy (CFSP) and the Common Security and Defence Policy (CSDP). It delves into the key actors, mechanisms, and decision-making processes that define the EU's approach to security challenges. Through detailed case studies, such as the conflicts in Israel-Palestine, Nagorno-Karabakh, and Niger, students will examine the intricacies of past and ongoing crises to extract valuable insights and lessons. The highlight of the course is a series of interactive negotiation simulations, where students engage in role-playing exercises within the EU Council to propose, debate, and formulate a coordinated response to hypothetical security threats. This practical component is designed to enhance decision-making skills and provide a realistic insight into the pressures and challenges faced by EU policymakers during a crisis. The course aims to equip students with the skills necessary to understand and influence EU security policy effectively.
