With the advent of globalisation and the digital age, governments are asked to provide more services with fewer resources. In European and elsewhere, citizens expect to be consulted and to participate in the crucial decision-making affecting their lives. Moreover, the movement of peoples across borders have created challenges to finding consensus between groups that favour a more cosmopolitan approach based on inclusion, diversity and open borders and those who would prefer a more conservative approach.
By default, public consultation and negotiation over public policy has become much more complex, conflict laden, and process oriented. This course aims to develop an understanding of the major theoretical approaches in the field of negotiation. It develops an appreciation of how the theories of negotiation are applied in a multi-stakeholder group or public setting. At the end of the semester students will be able: to demonstrate a practical understanding of negotiation techniques; to transfer & apply theoretical concepts to multi-stakeholder negotiations and/or consultations; and to train practical skills, communication, conflict analysis, negotiation, and multilateral conferencing.
Each class is conceptualised to have theoretical input, reflection, practical application and integration. The course complements the course on international conflict management by focusing on public settings, negotiations, and the domestic arena. The course is idea for student seeking to specialise in conflict management or who are seeking to get fresh insights into the field of negotiations.
This course is for 2nd year MIA and MPP students only.
