Tobias Bunde is a postdoctoral researcher at the Hertie School's Centre for International Security as well as Director of Research and Policy at the Munich Security Conference. He is also a member of the Executive Board of the Munich Security Conference Foundation. Tobias studied international relations at various institutions in Germany, France, and the United States and received his PhD in Political Science from Freie Universität Berlin.
His academic research focusses on the foreign and security policies of Western democracies, in particular Germany and the United States, the future of the West and international order as well as nuclear security. Tobias is also the project lead of the research project "Understanding Nuclear Assurance, Deterrence and Escalation in Europe", funded by the Stanton Foundation, and the lead author of the annual Munich Security Report, which serves as the scene-setter for the annual Munich Security Conference.
