Frank Mattern is a German business economist, Deputy Chairman of the Hertie Foundation, Managing Director at Frank Mattern Advisory and Investments, and Director Emeritus at McKinsey and Company. Previously he was Senior Partner, Global Head of Recruiting of McKinsey & Company, Inc and Chairman of the McKinsey Global Institute, the firm's economic think tank. From 2014 to 2015 he was responsible for Functional Practices at McKinsey and from 2007 until 2013, he was Managing Partner. Mattern joined McKinsey & Company in 1990, focusing on the financial sector. From 1997 to 2001, he led its German Financial Services Group and from 2002 to 2007, he was in charge of the global Business Technology Office. Since 2002, Mattern has served on the 31-member Shareholders’ Council, McKinsey’s highest global decision-making committee. He studied business administration and economics at the University of Münster and at the London School of Economics and Political Science. Later he earned his MBA at the Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania.
