Volker Stanzel is a former German diplomat who worked as Political Director and Ambassador to both China and Japan. Since retiring he has been teaching in Germany, the US and Japan, works at the German Institute for Foreign and Security Affairs (SWP) in Berlin, as president of the Association of German-Japanese Societies and as board member of the Academic Confucius Institute in Götingen. He publishes frequently on political topics and East Asian questions; his last book “Clueless Foreign Policy“ (in German: “Die Ratlose Außenpolitik und warum sie den Rückhalt der Gesellschaft braucht”) came out in 2019, his latest studies “Diplomacy and Artificial Intelligence” and "Dealing with Taiwan" in 2022.
