In March 2019, the Hertie School's Executive Education team welcomed employees of different Open Society Foundations offices across the world in a week-long executive customised training programme on the German political system and civil society. The programme featured various experts and included site visits. One highlight was participants exchanging thoughts on Germany’s global human rights positioning with Bärbel Kofler, Federal Government Commissioner for Human Rights Policy and Humanitarian Aid as well as a discussion with journalist Ali Aslan on media coverage of migration and right-wing extremism.
The Open Society Foundations (OSF) conduct in-depth research into the thematic and geographic areas of work to better inform the change. As part of this analysis, OSF identify the individuals and partner organisations best situated to bring positive impact in society as well as the tools. Those tools include grant making, advocacy, litigation, educational initiatives, publications, and conferences, among others.
Areas of focus
In five intensive seminar days, participants learned among other about Germany’s political system; Germany in Europe: Multi-level governance, federalism and local government; current affairs in German politics, political parties and communication; and discussed pressing issues such the rise of right-wing populism in Germany and Europe and feminist advocacy and activism in Germany.
Learning goals, formats and outcomes
The Hertie School of Governance Executive Education department has put together a multi-faceted seminar programme as well as visits to the Federal Parliament and the Federal Foreign Office. The Germany 101 Immersion Course offered extensive insights into the German political and societal landscape. The seminar gave participants the opportunity to extend their networks in Berlin as well as with OSF colleagues from other teams or offices.
