Enrico Letta, President of the Jacques Delors Institute and former Italian Prime Minister, has released a report titled "Much More Than a Market". The report is the result of over 400 meetings held in 65 European cities and proposes strategies to modernise the European Single Market, addressing contemporary challenges and opportunities.
Letta highlights the need for a collective effort to redefine the Single Market, engaging stakeholders from across Europe. Key themes include supporting a fair green and digital transition, strengthening EU security, and promoting job creation and business ease. Facilitating greater participation of small and medium-sized enterprises is also essential to prevent businesses from viewing the Single Market as an obstacle rather than an opportunity. Letta emphasises the importance of private capital as a crucial step that lays the groundwork for a more inclusive and efficient financing framework. Additionally, he aims for genuine social dimension within the Single Market, ensuring social justice, cohesion, and inclusive prosperity.
Central to Letta's vision is the addition of a fifth freedom, entailing the enhancement of research, innovation, and education. He emphasises the urgency of supporting European businesses to compete globally and advocates for streamlined regulations and consistent enforcement. The report offers insights on enlargement, security, and social cohesion, providing a roadmap for revitalising the Single Market while upholding European values in the 21st century.
