The legal battle for Osman Kavala’s freedom

Başak Çalı explains why the political prisoner’s case is of grave importance for the future of human rights in Turkey and across Europe in a POLITICO op-ed.

Osman Kavala, a civil society activist and human rights defender, has been imprisoned in Turkey for over five years now and faces life imprisonment. After yet another ruling by the European Court of Human Rights that his conviction was groundless, judges in Turkey will meet again to decide his fate.

Together with Philip Leach, Professor of Human Rights Law at Middlesex University, Başak Çalı, Professor of International Law and Co-Director of the Centre for Fundamental Rights, are representing Kavala at the European Court of Human Rights. They write that this case will not only have serious implications for Kavala personally, but also for the future of rule of law and human rights in Turkey and across Europe.
