US Department of Education accreditation for Hertie School

Anheier: “Fewer barriers than ever for US applicants”.

Berlin, 24 January 2013 – The Hertie School has been accredited by the US Department of Education, making it the second university in Germany to fulfill the US agency’s strict requirements regarding the quality of its study programmes and its overall financial stability. Students from the US who wish to study in Germany benefit greatly from the accreditation: American applicants accepted by the Hertie School can now apply for student loans in the US as of the academic year starting in September 2013.

“Transatlantic mobility – indeed in both directions – has been a key priority for the Hertie School since its foundation. Our robust network of connections with first-class US universities is an indispensable factor in the high quality of our teaching and research which also contributes to the exceptional international profile of our graduates. The US Accreditation means that there are fewer barriers than ever for US applicants wishing to come to Berlin. At the same time it is an exceptional mark of approval for us in the competitive international university landscape,” said Helmut K. Anheier, Dean and Professor of Sociology at the Hertie School.

The students in the two-year, English-language Master of Public Policy come from over 40 nations. US students make up 13 percent of the student body and are among the biggest groups after the German nationals who account for half. Ten of the Hertie School’s 21 international partner universities are based in the USA and Canada, including Columbia University, Georgetown University and the University of California, Los Angeles. 20 Percent of MPP students spend an exchange semester, or an entire academic year, at one of these institutions. In turn the Hertie School enrols several exchange students from its partner universities each semester.
